Who We Are

Maintaining Healthy Behaviour Initiative (MHBI) is a youth-led, community-rooted organization established in Lagos State in August 2013 under the SHiPS for MARPs project. Over more than a decade, MHBI has evolved from a community-based HIV prevention and behavioural change organization into a broader community health and development organization connecting underserved communities to health information, HIV prevention, testing, treatment support, human-rights protection, socioeconomic opportunities and essential services.

What We Do

MHBI works across the continuum from community access and health education to demand creation, testing and prevention, clinical linkage, treatment support, retention, protection and empowerment.

Who We Serve

Adolescents and young people; Adult Focused Population, key and underserved populations; people requiring HIV prevention, testing, treatment and care support; OTZ youth; people experiencing stigma or human-rights barriers; people requiring STI/TB screening or referral; and economically vulnerable community members.

What Makes MHBI Different

MHBI connects community mobilization and clinical service delivery. Community volunteers, peer navigators and field teams create access and demand, while clinical and Programmer teams provide or facilitate the next step in the care pathway.

Our Evolution

MHBI was established in August 2013 in Lagos State under the SHiPS for MARPs project. Its early work focused strongly on HIV prevention, behavioural change communication, community mobilization, advocacy and support for populations experiencing heightened vulnerability to HIV and related social barriers.

What Changed

Experience in communities showed that people need more than information: they need trusted pathways into services and support to remain connected to care. MHBI therefore strengthened HIV testing, prevention, treatment linkage, adherence support, community follow-up, human-rights advocacy, socioeconomic empowerment and stakeholder engagement.

Vision

A fulfilled, healthy and empowered generation in Nigeria where young people and adults can access equitable, quality and stigma-free health, legal and social support and actively participate in community development.

Mission

To improve the health, dignity, rights and socioeconomic well-being of underserved communities through community-led health services, HIV prevention and treatment support, health education, human-rights advocacy, strategic partnerships and socioeconomic empowerment.
